2005.02.28 - Mini-Omega places earns 4th at MVKWA Championship Tournament
On Sunday February 27th, 2005 roughly 1,400 kids ranging in age from 5 to 12 years old stepped on the mat for the MVKWA Championship Tournament. Mini-Omega celebrated his 6th birthday at this state championship tournament.
Mini-Omega wrestled very well. He won his first match to advance to the second round. If he had won his second round match, he would have automatically advanced to the championship round. Mini-Omega was defeating his second round opponent 8-0 in the second period when the referee stopped the match and disqualified Mini-Omega for crying. Let me retype this very slowly for emphasis... A 5-year-old was DISQUALIFIED for crying. Ever wonder what leads parents to become violent against officials? There 8, 9, 10 year olds who cry during their matches. Wrestling is violent and intense. In the world of shoulda-coulda-woulda, Mini-Omega earned a top 2 finish at STATE.
Back to reality, we can either be bitter and complain or learn and grow. Mini-Omega has to learn to better control his emotions. Mini-Omega is a young child with many painful lessons ahead.
Mini-Omega won his third match with a decisive 2nd period pin. I am unbelievably proud of Mini-Omega.
Switching gears... I have been fortunate to meet and exchange email with wrestling fans all over the world. A Japanese Omega fan was kind enough to send my son a toy for his birthday. It was complete with Japanese assembly instructions.
I would sincerely like to thank each and every fan that has taken the time to email me over the years. Your kind words and support mean a great deal to me. Thank you!

Happy Valentine's Day! (Yeah, I am late.)
A new Faberville episode went online yesterday. I encourage everyone to check it out.
Faberville is a "fun" release for me. I torment Cyrus endlessly... that alone makes it all worthwhile.
I received the Star Wars 4-dvd (widescreen) set for Valentine's Day. Wohoo! I am pretty geeked up about Star Wars right now. I cannot wait to see Episode 3.
Coaching football is rough. We scrimmaged for the first time this past weekend. Things went very poorly. The new people have a LOT of work to do in a short amount of time.
Mini-Omega is set to wrestle at regionals this weekend. A top 6 finish would advance him into the state tournament. I am more nervous about the tournament than he is. It is tough to be a parent/coach on the edge of the mat during a hard fought match. It is harder for me to witness him fail than it is for me to actually fail.

The tale of mini-Omega.
My son is a 'beast in training'. At 5-years-old, he went on a 20-mile Mt bike ride. During warmer weather, he regularly goes for 1.5-mile runs with me. Simply put, he has a motor that won't quit.
Mini-Omega (he is still 5) conditions with a local football team. I am the team's offensive coordinator. A couple of weeks ago, he broke his nose. It was a fluke accident. As a result of the broken nose, he had to miss a scheduled wrestling tournament the following day. He was pretty upset. Mini-Omega was cast for a semi-rigid face guard. (Similar to the one worn by LeBron James.)
In 2 tournaments thus far, (due to his size) mini-Omega has wrestled against 6-year-olds. He has taken 2nd place in both tournaments. First place has been within his grasp in both tournaments.
Mini-Omega, with a broken nose and all, wrestled this past Sunday. For the first time ever, he wrestled another 5-year-old. In fact, all of three kids in his bracket were 5-years-old.
Mini-Omega was awesome. He pinned his first opponent in roughly 10-seconds. He pinned his second opponent in about 30-seconds. The kid was actually on his back in the first 5-seconds. But, he was able to keep a shoulder up for about 20-seconds. He pinned his third opponent in about 5-seconds.
I was standing beside the opposing team coach. The coach looked at me blankly and said, "Wow." he got up and walked away. I am very proud of mini-Omega.
What is the "Omega" Mark Mattis doing? I am staying very busy. I help coach my son's wrestling team. I am offensive coordinator for a (springtime) local football team. Look at the schedule below. I am coaching 20 days this month.
