The weather has been all over the place for the past couple of weeks. Nonetheless, we strive to remain active. Last Sunday, we competed in the first Splash N Dash of the year. Each of cut several minutes off of our 1,000 yard swim time from last winter. That was awesome.

The downside was the weather outside. After getting out of the pool, we still had to run a (3.1 miles) 5k. It was 7° F outside. Running three miles in snow, ice, and near zero weather represented a unique challenge. Thankfully, we all survived.

As triathlon season approaches, it is important for us to get some time in on our bikes. Our 10-year-old son can be seen in the video to right. He is getting some bike work down while playing Mario Kart for the Nintendo Wii.

I received a book for Christmas - The Winners Manual. The book was written by Ohio State football coach, Jim Tressel. Now, I should make it clear, I am not some big OSU is god person. I very loosely follow Ohio State. I watch maybe 1 game per season. With that being said, thus far, this is an excellent book. If you are looking for a good read, check it out.

Happy New Years!

A few years ago, running a 5k seemed like a super-human feat. I have never been a distance runner. I have never been an endurance athlete. I played football. I worked hard for 5-seconds and then rested for 30-seconds. As a pro-wrestler, I could maintain an even tempo and wrestle for 10-minutes. Ten minutes is a long match by today's standards.

In 2009, I switched gears and moved toward endurance athletics. Endurance athletics became a family pursuit. My goal was to survive. In 2009, I competed in 20 races. Thirteen of those races were triathlons. Another 3 races were Splash N Dash (swim and run). All totaled, I raced just over 250 miles in 2009. My 10-year-old son raced almost 250 miles. My wife lead the way, totaling nearly 400 miles. We survived.

In 2010, Lord willing, I will again compete in a series of endurance races. I will seek to improve on my 2009 performance. I must get to the point that the race is not about survival. In 2010, I must be a faster and better endurance athlete.
