The Coffman YMCA Triathlon is in the books. It was a fun race that featured adult and kid distances. The race started at a after 8:00 on a cold Saturday morning.

The swim was... well, no one drowned, that we know of. The swim resembled salmon swimming upstream. The Coffman YMCA has a small pool. The pool is 25 yards long and has 6 lanes. The race called for a 300 yard swim. We swam from one end of the pool to the other and then back, slid under the lane tubing and did again, and again, and again, and again, and again. We swam back and forth in all 6 lanes. That in and of itself is not so difficult. The problem is that 230 people signed up. A new person hopped in the water every 2 seconds. We were on top of one another. I got kicked. I kicked people. It was impossible to pass. It was impossible to pass anyone.
The bike ride was ok. The bike portion of the race was 11 miles. My goal for this race was to average 17 mph on the bike and finish in 38-minutes. I was able to accomplish that goal.
The 3.1 mile run featured a lot of hills. In my last 5k, I ran a personal record 28:11. My goal for Coffman was to set a new personal record. I really wanted to get under 28:00-minutes. By my watch, I ran the 5k in 27:59. I am waiting for the official time. My wife, as usual, beat me.
Our son, who now prefers to be referred to as "Young Lion" did well in the youth version of the triathlon. His goal was to complete the event in 25-minutes or less. He completed the swim, bike, and run in (I think) 22:19. As a reward (positive reinforcement) for reaching his goal, we went to Hot Topic and he bought at
FRED t-shirt. He is a little excited about the shirt. He plans to wear it to school on Monday.
UPDATE: The Young Lion was the first kid in and out of the pool. He was the first kid to start and finish the bike. He was the first kid to start and finish the run. His time of 22:19 was fastest enough to earn first place overall in the 7-10 age group. I am proud of him - not because he took first - I am proud of him because he pushed hard.
