Running around

2008.07.14
It was a busy weekend in the Omega household. On Friday, MO (Mini-Omega) had his annual sport physical. The doctor is concerned that MO is 80th percentile in height and 90th percentile in weight. He also suggested that MO get more exercise. The doctor suggested MO spend one hour a day outside playing... That was a bizarre experience.

On Saturday morning, we got Mini-Omega outfitted for football season. He has all of his equipment. From there, we picked up his baseball award. We missed the banquet while we were on vacation. From there, we headed to Cedarville. Some friends are opening a small coffee shop. They are doing all of the renovations themselves. MO and I spent about 5 hours helping them put in a hard wood floor. My knees are bruised and have blisters. On the upside, the promise of future coffee was enough to keep me going.

On Sunday morning, we were up early and had everyone out the door headed to Xenia by 7:00 am. MO registered for his first ever youth triathlon. The distances for 9-year-olds were: 100-meter swim, 4k-bike ride, and 1k run. There were close to 300 kids (from age 5 - 14) competing. The kids started in heats of 18. MO was in heat 15. We stood at the starting line waiting for almost an hour and a half, ugh. Once MO was finally able to start, he performed very well. By my stopwatch, MO finished in 18 minutes and 48 seconds. The official times will be posted in the next couple of days. Assuming my watch was correct, MO bested last year's top time in his age group by a full minute.

Sunday afternoon, we were back on the road. The Ohio River Road Runners Club was having a picnic. Mrs. Omega and MO ran in the four-mile fun run. Mrs. Omega finished in 32 minutes. MO finished in about 38-minutes.

The doctor suggested that MO spend an hour outside exercising/playing every day. In the morning, MO finished the youth triathlon in about 19-minutes. In the afternoon, he finished the 4-mile run in about 38-minutes. Between the two activities, MO exercised for 57-minutes, 3-minutes short of what the doctor suggested. Hmm... I guess we just need to push the boy harder.

This past Wednesday, MO ran a trail series 5k run at Carriage Hill Park in Dayton. He finished with one of his better times this summer, 31:56. I guess he needed to get another half hour of exercise that day as well...

update: Mo officially finished the 2008 Xenia Youth Triathlon in 17:26. Out of 146 boys and girls in the 7-10 age group, MO placed 4th.
