Bob Backlund for President!

2007.05.23

On Sunday, I wrestled against Chris Kahn in HDW. I had never met Chris before. Actually, there were a lot of people on that card that I had never met before. Matt Morgan, Shark Boy, David Young, Sterling James Keenan and a whole host of other indy talent was on hand.

Anyway, Chris Kahn is a big guy. He is right around 6'2" and right at 260 pounds. Kahn moves well and strikes hard. He is a good wrestler. Our match ended abruptly around the 10-minute mark.

I think we were both just getting warmed up. I would be happy to step in the ring with him again - especially if we had a 20 or 30-minute time limit.

Kahn's entrance music was a Bon Jovi song. He should be made to suffer!

"Chris Kahn had a kick ass old school match with Mark Mattis I about creamed my pants for them two. and yes I totally marked out for it" Jabari Akeem Mustafa (Comments taken from Jabari's myspace blog.)

Sunday at HDW was also cool because, for the first time in roughly 9 or 10 months, the entire Black and Blue Crew were together. Tommy Chill, Cyrus Poe and I have not been on a card together since July of 2006. Poe and Chill successfully defended their HDW tag team titles against "The Clash" in a strong competitive bout.

Also on hand were Matt Mason, Jamie Braxton and Sherman Tank. I have known Mason and Tank since almost the very beginning. I first met Mason and Tank in January or February of 2000. Wow, it is hard to believe it has been over 7 years.

On the down side, Sunday was a long day. I left the house at 11:00am. I arrived at 10:00pm. My three kids were in bed asleep. I missed out on what was a gorgeous day.

Derailing for a moment...

I think Bob Backlund is a misunderstood genius. Backlund was an awesome WWWF Champion. Backlund was a tremendous amateur wrestler. I absolutely love watching wrestling matches from that era. I listen to the ring introductions and the play-by-play commentary and I am simply in awe. In 1980, pro-wrestling was treated as a sport. The announcers talk about strengths and weaknesses.

Wrestlers would pick a body part and attempt to wear down and weaken their opponent. In the YouTube video on the right, Bob Backlund defends the WWWF World Heavyweight Championship against the Iron Sheik.

I know that most of today's fans are bored to tears by a match like this. Personally, I love it. I cannot get enough of it.

In case this is my final post of the week, I hope everyone has a safe and fun Memorial Day weekend.
