Wanda, Chester, and Braedon

2005.08.22
Friday night was our final tune up scrimmage prior to starting the regular season. This Friday night, under the lights, it counts. It was a disappointing outing. Things did not go as we had hoped. But, it is a learning process. The players continue to work hard and learn from their mistakes. That is all we can ask.

We had Saturday morning film session followed by some conditioning work. I am still the "new" coach. I am an assistant coach. I trying not to step on toes and make enemies. But, I would be lying if I did not say; the strength and conditioning program is an abomination. The weight room itself is a joke.

The team has a tradition of losing and losing big. The kids are too small and too slow to truly compete on a week-in and week-out basis. That is not meant to be cruel. It is the truth. Players need to start taking strength and conditioning seriously. The program needs to drastically change. It will not happen overnight. It will take years to truly change the mindset/work ethic and develop these athletes.

The kids deserve better. The kids have the raw potential to become solid athletes. We have to right the ship.

Wanda and Chester Moving on...

On Saturday, we got a new puppy. He is an 8-week old beagle pup that we got through a rescue organization. He is a great pup. He has been dubbed, "Chester". Our chihuahua is named Wanda from the cartoon - "The Fairly Odd Parents". Chester is another character from the show. If we get 6 or 8 more dogs, we will probably keep this theme going... Hey, the cartoon rocks - leave me alone.

For the moment, Wanda is bigger and more coordinated than Chester. She is roughing him quite a bit. She is enjoying herself. In about a month, the tables will turn. Chester will be the one laying out the butt whoopings.

Chester hasn't gotten used to sleeping at night yet. So, we are lacking in the sleep department.

Mini-Omega post game Sunday, Mini-Omega's football season kicked off. Mini-Omega is 6-years-old. He is in his second season of tackle football. He is starting to "get it". He is leaps and bounds better than he was last season.

Last season, he ran the ball 1-time. He got hit and decided he only wanted to play defense. He didn't like getting hit. He played defense and (most importantly) had fun.

This season, he is again playing defense. He is moving to the ball much better. He is not afraid to take on the ball carrier. He has even practiced some at fullback.

Yesterday, Mini-Omega's team romped. The Wee Rams beat the dog out of the opposing team. Mini-Omega got some fourth quarter time at QB. He ran a QB sneak straight up the middle for a few yards. He ran a naked bootleg and got caught in the backfield. He got hit on both plays. He loved it.

As I have written on here in the past, I do not push for Mini-Omega to be a "superstar". I want him to be active. I want him to have the same passion for sports as I do. I am just glad he is having fun.

Last night, I was supposed to attend a wrestling event with Cyrus "you have bastardized my work" Poe and Tommy "I'm just big-boned" Chill. The time came for me to hop in the car and drive an hour and a half... I just couldn't do it. Too much time in the sun. Too much time on the road. Too tired.

I don't know if it is because I am getting older or from burning the candle on both ends for so long... but I am tired. I have the energy to play with my son, coach football, lift weights, and sleep. That is about it.
