The game was awful. The Sizzle lost 54-0 to the DC Divas on Saturday night under the shadow of FedEx field in Washington DC. The offense managed only 1 first half first down. We achieved that via a defensive penalty. In the second half, we managed 2 first downs.

The Divas demonstrated an absolute lack of respect with their coaching decisions. They (unsuccessfully) attempted 3 or 4 onside kicks. They opted to keep their offense on the field for a couple of 4th and 20 situations from deep inside their own territory.

The offensive unit was unable to gain any yardage - any momentum. I have not seen the final stats as of yet, but in the first half the Sizzle ran the ball 17 times for a grand total of 7 yards and were 2 of 9 passing for -3 yards. A couple of interceptions were thrown and 1 or 2 fumbles were lost.

The responsibility for this failure falls on my shoulders. I am offensive coordinator for a team that has been shutout in 4 of the past 5 games. Coaching football has long been a dream of mine. My dream has become a horrific nightmare.

In sports (and real life), there is often a lack of self-awareness. For example: A wide-receiver who is slow as dirt and unable to catch the ball or run a decent route is lower on the depth chart than a speedy wide receiver with good hands. The slow wide receiver will get upset with his lack of playing time and think the coach is treating him unfairly. He is unable to see the big picture. He is unable to objectively assess his own abilities.

I believed that I know - understand - and can teach the game of football. Perhaps I need to step away from the situation to get a more objective look.

Two more practices, 1 film session, and 1 game remain.

We saw some old friends over the weekend. It was excellent to catch up and swap stories. Good times.
