I am a "mark" for old school wrestling stars. I grew up during the glorious 1980's. There will always be a special place in my heart for the NWA and WWF guys from the mid to later 1980's.
On Wednesday night, the IWA (http://www.IWAwrestling.com) held an event in Washington Court House Ohio. It was a packed house. I was surprised to see so many people drinking and "whooping" it up on a Wednesday night. This was the first wrestling event I have attended in any capacity in quite some time. If I am not wrestling on a card, I hate to go-sit-watch. I generally feel out of place. I put all of that aside for the evening.
It was nice to see many familiar faces. My former tag team partner, one half of the fraternity, (IWA U.S. Champion) "The Alpha Male" Zach Avery defended the title against Devlin Anderson. Homicide was accompanied by an "uber-hot" chick. Elliot Michaels wrestled in singles action. The Riot Squad beat up on Freakboy and Dr. E-Dogg. It was a fun card.
In addition to cold alcohol and indy wrestling action, the fans had reason to be excited. Former WWF Heavyweight Champion, The Iron Shiek was a special guest at the event. The instant he walked through the door, fans began chanting, "SHEIK!" At intermission, he signed autographs for fans and performed an exhibition with Persian clubs.
The Iron Sheik challenged members of the audience to a contest with the Persian clubs. Five people were chosen. I was the fifth and final person. The fans picked ahead of me tried and quickly failed to complete a single repetition with the clubs. I managed a couple of reps. The super (or to quote tree-hater, "uber cool") cool part was when my 4 year old son got to sit on the Sheik's lap for a photo.
My son watches wrestling with me occasionally. I don't watch very regularly. My son only watches a fraction of the times when I have it on. My son doesn't know The Iron Sheik. So, he doesn't realize how evil / hated The Iron Sheik was 20 years ago. Nonetheless, I can say my son has sat on The Iron Sheik's lap.
