Those of you who frequent this website know that I intend to play semi-pro football this summer. To those new visitors to the website, you may want to check the archives and catch up on everything going on...
On Saturday we had our first (full contact) scrimmage. Our season officially kicks off on the final Saturday in July. This scrimmage was intended to serve as a barometer. It was supposed to show us our strengths and weaknesses.
There were a few breakdowns. I made plenty of mistakes. I have numerous things to work on. All aspects of my game need improvement.
Mental mistake: I (as tight end) ran the plays in from the sideline most of the afternoon. On one occasion, I called the wrong formation. I called the right play but the wrong formation.
Blocking: I need to hold my blocks longer. There were several times when I would block a linebacker only to have him get around me and tackle the running back downfield. If I held my block for one second longer, the running back would have had clear sailing all of the way to the end zone.
I can correct the mistakes. I can fix the problems. The scrimmage was a good experience. On a positive note... I did have some success.
Our running back fumbled the ball; I quickly swooped in and picked it up. I made it about 7 yards downfield before I was dragged down. Later, I ran a short pattern across the middle and picked up another 8 or 10 yards and a first down.
Physically, the scrimmage was absolutely exhausting. I was ready for a nice long nap. On Sunday morning, I was awake by 6 AM. My legs and back were on fire. I spent a lot of time with ice on various body parts throughout the day.
This morning, I woke up at 5 AM and headed to the gym. I had a good morning lifting. My legs and back feel much better today. I feel good. I hope I feel this good after our season opening game in late July.
