2002 Goal

2002.01.24

In 2001, I worked more than 40 matches beginning in March and ending in early December. I gained a ton of important experience and exposure. It was a pretty full schedule. I took most of December off to heal and recover. Now 2002 is in full swing, well sort of. I have worked 2 Sunday evening events this month and am geared up for a third. With that in mind, this past week my wife asked me when I plan to start working Saturday events again.

I have wrestled with that question most of the week. I have no interest in driving 3 hours each direction in unstable winter weather conditions. I do not enjoy sitting in freezing and cramped locker rooms. At this point, I am content to work "local" (short drive) shows.

My primary goal this past year was to work as many shows as possible. This year, my primary goal is slightly different. This year, my primary goal focuses more on out of ring work than on in-ring work. Don't get me wrong, I plan to work hard to improve my in-ring skills. It simply no longer ranks as the primary goal.

In October 2001 I traveled to Eldon, Missouri to work out with NWA, WCW, WWF legend Harley Race. After one training session, I was chatting with Wade Chism (5' 11" 257 lbs.) about things I could improve.

Wade looked at me and without hesitation said, "You have good frame, you could put on another 30 lbs." He was right. I am too thin. I need to gain muscle mass.

My primary goal for 2002 is to add about 20 lbs. of muscle mass. I am pushing my muscles to the limits in the weight room. I am being extra careful to consume the appropriate number of calories. I am closely monitoring value (protein, carbs, fat) of the calories I intake.

I don't mean to discount the dedication of those who rely on a bottle of Pepsi, a Big Mac, a cigarette and an Ab-Tron to achieve their physical goals. Everyone has different approach. But, that is a story for another day.
